English Teacher Certifications and Qualifications

Requirements for English teachers vary across the different states but in general, to teach English you will need a bachelor’s degree in English and a secondary education endorsement or certification since you’ll be teaching in the upper grades. Some states may require that you participate in a teacher prep program. Most states will require that you pass their version of the English skills test to teach English.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Spanish, Education, or a related field (required).
  • Massachusetts teaching certification in Spanish (required or in progress).
  • Experience teaching Spanish at the middle or high school level (preferred).
  • Strong classroom management and instructional skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Passion for fostering language acquisition and cultural appreciation.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to pass a background check and fingerprinting.
  • Fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Familiarity with technology-based language learning tools (preferred).
