English Teacher Certifications and Qualifications

Requirements for English teachers vary across the different states but in general, to teach English you will need a bachelor’s degree in English and a secondary education endorsement or certification since you’ll be teaching in the upper grades. Some states may require that you participate in a teacher prep program. Most states will require that you pass their version of the English skills test to teach English.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct instruction and support in language acquisition and academic content areas tailored to the needs of EL students.

  • Collaborate with general education teachers and school staff to develop and implement instructional goals and strategies aligned with district and IEP requirements.

  • Monitor and assess student progress using formal and informal assessments to inform instruction.

  • Communicate regularly with parents, guardians, and team members to share updates and strategies for student success.

  • Prepare for and actively participate in IEP meetings, EL program planning, and other relevant student support meetings.

  • Support classroom differentiation and scaffolded instruction to meet diverse learning needs.

Requirements:

  • Valid Illinois certification as an EL Specialist or appropriate teaching credential.

  • Experience working with English Learners in school settings preferred.

  • Strong understanding of language acquisition strategies, instructional technologies, and differentiated instruction.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with educators, families, and multidisciplinary teams.

  • Strong organizational skills with consistent and accurate documentation practices.

Compensation:
